Counselling for Adults & Young People in Bangor, North Down, Ards area and online.
Hi, I’m Janis, founder of Breathe Counselling which offers therapy to those in my community of Bangor/ North Down and further afield.
Breathe represents a space where people can take time to come back to who they are in a grounding, authentic and safe way.
I offer counselling for young people aged 14+ along with adults. I am a neuro-affirming therapist with both life and professional experience of neurodivergence and will meet you exactly where you are.
Coming to Counselling can be extremely daunting so initially we can meet online or chat on the phone to discover how we might work together. Just click the button to book a call or meeting. This is free and will be for 30 minutes.

Being young can be pretty tough. Friendship fall-outs, conflict with parents, exam pressures, neurodivergence and social media all play their part to make life as a teenager today seem like a lot to contend with. As well as this, finding our unique identity and place in the world is both exciting and daunting.
I use a respectful, non-judgmental and playful approach to provide a space where you can be heard - allowing you to begin understanding yourself and your own amazing gifts and strengths.
With over 30 years experience working with young people in a variety of settings, I believe I can connect with you and help you on a small part of your journey, as well as providing you with skills to manage today.
I will work with your parents/caregivers as well but only in a way that you are happy with and that works for you. This is so you as a whole family can support each other.
We can arrange a free first session either in person or phone, with or without your parents /carers there, to see if you think I might be able to support you.
I have extensive experience of working with children who have been involved in Harmful Sexual Behaviour. This is a sensitive and difficult area which I treat with compassion and respect for everyone affected.
At request from agencies or families I can offer completion of the AIM3 Assessment and Intervention programmes.
I also have huge experience with the issues faced by young people who are or have been in Care.
If you are a care experienced person I can work with you, to help navigate and better understand your life experience in a compassionate and non-judgemental space.

Life’s pressures can sometimes feel overwhelming. You may be finding every day a struggle, suffering from anxiety or navigating the challenges which come from parenting a child with a disability or neurodivergent needs. Maybe you have recently received a diagnosis of Autism or ADHD yourself and are dealing with the changes this might mean for you.
I can provide a safe space for you to explore all of this at a pace to suit you. I will not rush you or ask you to cover anything you don’t wish to and I believe in working with the whole person – mind, body and spirit to bring about genuine, lasting healing and change.
I have extensive professional experience in the area of mediation so on request I can support you and others to rebuild your relationships through therapeutic restorative meetings.
I also have huge experience with the issues faced by people who have been in Care. If you are a care experienced person I can work with you to help navigate and better understand your life experience in a compassionate and non-judgemental space.
As well as this I can support adults facing a diagnosis of Autism or ADHD, or those caring for a child with neurodivergent needs.
I hope to provide a space where you can be “real” and will accept you as you are with no pretence. In turn I will be authentic and honest with you so we can work together to tackle whatever brings you to Counselling in the best way for you.

I am a qualified Counsellor and Youth and Community worker with over 30 years of experience in Youth Justice, Education and Youth Services.
I have had the privilege of connecting with and supporting many young people and families over the years when they are experiencing their most difficult and challenging times and hope to have done this with compassion and authenticity.
I am a specialist within my professional role in working with children who have displayed Harmful Sexual Behaviour and have shared my expertise in this area at national Conferences.
As parent to a child with a disability and relative to neurodivergent individuals, I have personal experience of the challenges faced by those with a diagnosis of Autism or ADHD. Within my work role I have supported many neurodivergent individuals to navigate the neurotypical world and grow into their real self

I offer face-to-face counselling in Bangor alongside online sessions for clients across North Down, Holywood, Ards Peninsula and throughout the UK.
My therapy practice is based in Bangor and I support both adults and young people aged 14+ in a safe, supportive and non-judgemental environment.
